Final Summary and Recommandations

The Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) this morning released the final summary and recommendations (Report 6) of the Supplementary Study for the Development of a Higher-Order Public Transit System in Gatineau’s West End.

The main purpose of the complementary study is to identify the optimal solution (mode and circuit) that will meet the public transportation needs of residents in Gatineau’s west end over the next 30 to 50 years in a context of population growth, transportation system congestion and the importance of interprovincial exchanges.

The solution should reflect current political priorities in terms of transportation electrification, sustainable mobility and integrated planning of transportation and land use, from both the local and metropolitan perspectives. Report 6 was tabled in 2021, providing an overview of the situation at that time, and a summary of the main phases of the complementary study, which describes how the solution deemed optimal meets its main objectives. The proposed recommendations will be used to guide and expand on the next phases of analysis, development, detailed engineering and implementation of this project, which are expected to extend over some ten years.

The complementary study is the product of collaboration between the STO and the project partners: Quebec’s ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable (MTMD), the National Capital Commission (NCC), Ville de Gatineau and the City of Ottawa. Furthermore, in order to keep the public informed about the project and maintain an open and transparent dialogue with the community, the STO set up the TramGO website. “The complementary study summary clearly demonstrates the need for a tram in Gatineau. This is no longer an option, but an essential for our region. That’s where we currently stand,” indicated STO Board of Directors Chair Jocelyn Blondin. “We want to start the pre-project studies as soon as possible, and to do so, we need financial backing from the federal government. We have been seeing encouraging signs for some time now, but as politicians, we have to be able to make a concrete announcement soon so we can keep our project office team mobilized. These professionals are ready to proceed to the next phases and to meet with residents. Thus, we are hoping for good news in the next few weeks.”
